Apple Pay India: Supported Cards, Devices and Setup
Apple Pay is now live in India with eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards. Check the supported devices, Wallet setup, contactless payment steps and launch limits.
Direct answer: Apple Pay launched in India on September 30, 2026. At launch, it supports eligible Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards. In-store payments require an iPhone XR or later with iOS 18 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later with watchOS 11 or later paired with an iPhone XR or later. iPad can use Apple Pay in participating apps and on the web, while Apple says Mac support is coming soon.
Apple's India launch announcement establishes the current card, device and market scope. The launch does not say that Axis Bank debit cards, cards from other banks, UPI or QR payments are supported, so those options should not be inferred from the Apple Pay name or from a contactless logo at checkout.
Which cards support Apple Pay in India at launch?
Apple names eligible Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards. This is narrower than all Axis Bank cards and narrower than all Visa or Mastercard cards in India. Apple does not list debit cards, prepaid cards or another bank in the launch announcement.
Eligibility is ultimately controlled by Axis Bank and the card network. If Wallet or the Axis Bank app says a card is not supported, confirm the exact card product, card status and account eligibility with Axis Bank instead of repeatedly trying another device. Apple's setup guidance likewise directs users with card-approval problems to the issuer.
Apple says existing card rewards and benefits continue when the eligible card is used through Apple Pay. That does not create a new reward or guarantee that every merchant transaction earns the same benefit; the card's normal issuer terms still apply.
Which iPhone and Apple Watch models can use Apple Pay in India?
Apple's India launch footnote sets these minimums:
- iPhone: iPhone XR or later with iOS 18 or later.
- Apple Watch: Apple Watch Series 6 or later with watchOS 11 or later, paired with iPhone XR or later.
- iPad: supported for participating purchases in apps and on the web; an iPad is not the in-store tap device described by Apple.
- Mac: Apple says support is coming soon, so the launch announcement does not establish that Mac checkout is already live in India.
A newer device alone does not make an unsupported card eligible. The device, software, Apple Account, device authentication and card-issuer checks all have to pass. Keep iOS, iPadOS or watchOS current through Apple's normal Software Update route before diagnosing an enrollment problem.
How do I add an Axis Bank card to Apple Pay?
Apple documents two launch paths. You can use the latest version of the Axis Bank app to add the eligible card to Apple Wallet, or open Wallet on iPhone, tap the plus button and follow the steps to add a debit or credit card. In India at launch, the supported subset described by Apple is the eligible Axis Bank Visa or Mastercard credit-card group above.
- Confirm that the iPhone and operating system meet Apple's India minimum.
- Sign in to the Apple Account used on the device and make sure Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode is set.
- Update the Axis Bank app, then try its Add to Apple Wallet route; or open Wallet and tap the plus button.
- Follow the on-screen issuer verification. Axis Bank may require additional information or approval.
- After the card appears in Wallet, check that it is also added separately to Apple Watch if you plan to pay with the watch.
If enrollment fails, keep the exact message and contact Axis Bank. Do not assume that removing other cards, changing the Apple Account region or repeatedly scanning the card will bypass issuer eligibility.
Where can I use Apple Pay in India?
For an in-store purchase, double-click the iPhone side button or Home button, authenticate if prompted, and hold the top of the iPhone near the contactless reader. On Apple Watch, double-click the side button and hold the display near the reader.
Apple says the launch covers in-store NFC payments plus participating app and web checkout. Its launch list includes Apple Store locations, Blinkit, Chaayos, Comet, Croma, Interflora, Ixigo, Le15 Patisserie, Reliance brands, Tata 1mg and Zomato, and it names payment-service partners bringing Apple Pay to additional merchant networks.
That list is evidence of launch participation, not a promise that every branch, terminal, app screen or website checkout is already enabled. For an unlisted merchant, look for Apple Pay during app or web checkout or a contactless reader in store. A terminal displaying NFC does not prove that every card, amount or issuer path will be accepted.
Apple Pay's India launch is a card-in-Wallet service. The announcement does not describe adding a UPI account, paying a UPI ID or scanning a merchant QR code. The Economic Times reports Apple's payment executive describing Apple Pay and UPI as complementary, but that does not turn the launch into UPI support.
How does Apple Pay protect the card number?
Apple says the actual card number is not stored on the device or Apple servers and is not shared by Apple with the merchant. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and stored in the device's Secure Element. Payment authentication stays on the device through Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode when required.
Apple also says it does not retain transaction information that can be tied back to the user; transaction records remain between the user, merchant and bank or card issuer. This security model does not remove the need to protect the Apple Account, device passcode and bank account or to review unfamiliar transactions with Axis Bank.
If an iPhone is lost or stolen, use Find My to locate or lock it and suspend payments from that device. Contact the issuer as well if there is any concern about the underlying card or account.
What should I check if Apple Pay does not work?
- Confirm the card is an eligible Axis Bank-issued Visa or Mastercard credit card, not merely a card carrying one of those network names.
- Verify the device and software minimums and that Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode is active.
- Use the latest Axis Bank app or Wallet enrollment path and complete any issuer verification.
- For a failed store payment, test only at a participating contactless terminal and ask the merchant whether Apple Pay is enabled there.
- For a failed app or web payment, confirm that Apple Pay is offered on that exact checkout and device.
- Contact Axis Bank for card eligibility, account approval or transaction declines; contact Apple for Wallet or device issues after the issuer confirms its side.
What remains outside the launch announcement?
- No Axis Bank debit-card, prepaid-card or other-bank support is announced.
- No UPI account or QR-payment support is announced.
- Mac support is described as coming soon, with no exact India launch date in this announcement.
- Future banks, cards, merchants and apps are not identified or dated.
- Launch availability does not guarantee approval for every card or acceptance at every terminal.
